Good News – Companies Keep Hiring As Demand Grows
There is good news for U.S. jobseekers. There will continue to be an abundance of computer jobs for U.S. jobseekers throughout the decade. There will be expanding U.S. computer job opportunities for those trained in fields such as software architecture, product design, project management, technical support and IT consulting. Computer jobs will continue to develop in all 50 U.S. States.
The fears of computer jobs migrating far outweigh the reality. According to a new study by the Association for Computing Machinery Computers released March 2006, the United States continues to increase the value of the work it is performing with its computer jobs in the national and global economy. The U.S. will be better off identifying the high-growth, high-value opportunities that lie ahead, rather than trying to hang on to work that’s been commoditized by technology and the global dispersion of knowledge to low-cost countries. Therefore, U.S. computer jobs will continue to increase. The U.S. will see only 2 percent to 3 percent of its IT jobs shifted overseas annually over the next decade, according to the study. These jobs will be largely lower-end virtual ‘rules-based’ computer jobs.
Computer jobs requiring teamwork, expert communication, and critical thinking—such as troubleshooting, making decisions, developing systems that are business-driven, and building and maintaining computer infrastructures will not be outsourced overseas. The study also finds that IT hiring is higher today than it was during the peak of the dotcom boom in the 1990’s. U.S. IT employment was 17% higher two years ago than in the previous 6 years, according to the ACM study [http://www.acm.org/globalizationreport], and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data reveals that IT jobs are predicted to be among the fastest-growing occupations over the next decade.
Computer Jobs with the growing information technology professional services sector continue to increase. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) predicts that approximately 1.4 million computer jobs will be created between now and 2012 in the U.S.
Companies from a variety of sectors in the economy continue to discover greater efficiency and more competitive operations through investment in IT. Therefore, there will be continued growing demand for IT as underserved fields such as health care, retail trade, construction, and certain services make greater investment in technology. U.S. computer jobs will continue to increase.
Experience Is an Acceptable Substitute for Education
Because demand exceeds supply, computer jobs, computer programming jobs and technical support jobs are available to people with experience, as an acceptable substitute for formal education, in almost all cases. The President of the Association for Computing Machinery reported recently that the number of American college students majoring in computer science is dwindling. David A. Patterson cited a survey from last year that found only 1 in 75 college students majored in computer science in 2005, compared to 1 in 30 in 2000.
Government jobs in technology allow experience to substitute for formal college education in nearly all cases. Because of high demand, many jobseekers are moving into the industry by bringing experience, vendor-sponsored training or vendor product certifications. Because technology is changing so rapidly, it is difficult for college students to learn all products or new technologies….
Now, a survey from the Society for Information Management (SIM) indicates that getting the best possible people on the payroll will become the challenge in coming years. In “The Information Technology Workforce: Trends and Implications 2005-2008,” authors say that factors such as the shift from IT services to business-process services…” and MORE
